Being a non-profit organization, the Northwoods Children's Museum relies on the the help of volunteers to continue to operate. Every year volunteers work the equivalent of a full-time staff person. Volunteers also help the museum raise money through events such as special event parking, brat sales or fundraisers.
A few hours a year can add up for the museum as well as our community. You'll get to learn new skills, meet a diverse set of people and enjoy a sense of personal achievement.
Adult Volunteer Program
We are always looking for volunteers to perform various projects that benefit the museum and the families that visit.
These include:
Creating arts and crafts for the Art Room
Light cleaning
Handyman work
Prospective adult volunteers 18 years old or older are subject to a criminal background check prior to approval. Thereafter, adult volunteers are subject to periodic criminal background checks. Individuals on the Sex Offender Registry will not be considered. NCM cannot accommodate adult volunteers seeking to satisfy court-ordered community service or Huber work release.
High School Volunteer Program
Starting in September, high school students come to the museum after school based on their availability and assist with various projects. Many students take advantage of this program to fulfill graduation community service requirements. This also helps instill a sense of pride in community for high school students.
Youth Volunteers (YVs)
Be a part of a creative and energetic environment where volunteers are encouraged to have fun as they work. Plus YVs learn leadership skills and learn how to work as a team with their peers. YVs will assist museum staff one day a week at their choice of 3-hour shift from 10:30 - 1:30 or 1:30 - 4:30.
With the written permission of a parent or legal guardian, youth ages 14 and up can volunteer on their own, and ages 10-13 can volunteer and gain work experience when accompanied by a caregiver and/or on a case by case basis. NCM strictly adheres to Wisconsin youth labor laws.
Youth volunteers may be permitted to satisfy juvenile court community service obligations on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Museum. In addition to the prospective volunteer interview, the youth community service candidate and their parent or legal guardian shall sign any releases requested. If the candidate is viable, the Executive Director shall forward the candidate's information to the Board for approval prior to assigning any duties.
